“What’s Left of Apollo” by Jan Schreiber, adapted from R. M. Rilke

By Ernest Hilbert • February 28, 2018 • E-Verse Universe

Even without a head
the dude is awesome.
He’s got a kind of glow
about him that’s
incredibly intense,
but still you sense
he’s holding something back.
And that’s what knocks
you out – the way his pecs
look hard and soft
at once, that kind
of furrow like a smile you see
running from his belly down
to where his weapon
used to be.

It makes you think
how could a hunk
of hammered stone that’s half
demolished stop
you in your tracks?
How could it menace like
a flash of lion’s pelt
and then break out to zap
you like a laser? See,
no matter where you stand
you’re in the crosshairs, man.
You’ve got to change your life.
