My brother is always alert to revolting trends in American eating. He recently sent me ads for a sandwich that was test-marketed by KFC in parts of Nebraska and Rhode Island. In what seems to be a gambit to cash in on the late Atkins craze, KFC dispensed with bread (which seems to me integral to our very concept of a sandwich) for the “Double-Down,” which consists of bacon and cheese (and the Cololonel’s Secret Sauce) between two deep-fried pieces of chicken!
