Full StoryTop Five Books amd Movies Told from a Controversial Perspective
The movie The Help is doing great at the box office, and is surrounded by Oscar buzz. But the book and movie have both been criticized for the cliche of telling the story of the Civil Rights Movement and/or the mistreatment of blacks from the perspective of white people. In the case of The Help, the plot centers around a white woman who decides to write a non-fiction book featuring the stories of black women who are maids for white women in early 1960s Jackson, Mississippi. The novel (authored by a white woman) in part tries to answer this by having chapters alternate first person viewpoints among two black maids and one white woman, with the first and last chapters being the maids’. The film features one of the maids as the narrator. It’s certainly true that a large number of movies about the oppression of blacks have been told from the perspective of white people. (This is true of the tales of a number of different oppressed groups. For example, the most widely known Holocaust film is Schindler’s List, which tells of the Holocaust via the main character, a German Catholic member of the Nazi party). Here are perhaps the top five

Full Story“Tempest Milky Way” by Randy Halverson
“One of the challenges in making this video, was trying to get good storm with stars shots. The opportunity doesn’t come along very often, the storm has to be moving the right speed and the lightning can overexpose the long exposures. I had several opportunities this summer to get storm and star shots. In one instance, within a minute of picking up the camera and dolly, 70mph winds hit. One storm was perfect, it came straight towards the setup, then died right before it reached it.”

Full Story“My Apocalypse” by Arch Enemy
“Originally regarded as a ‘supergroup,’ featuring former members of such seminal bands as Carcass, Mercyful Fate, and In Flames, Arch Enemy have managed to permanently shed that title, as each new album has elevated the band to new heights of metal stardom. Led by ace lead guitarist Michael Amott, his brother (and fellow axeman) Christopher, and the supremely skilled drummer Daniel Erlandsson, Arch Enemy started out following the example of both Michael’s former band Carcass and Swedish greats At the Gates, creating unrelenting, no-frills Scandinavian thrash/death metal, but it wasn’t until vocalist Angela Gossow joined the fold for their third album, 2001’s Wages of Sin, that the band first got a taste of the big time.” – Adrien Begrand
