This trope has been around for awhile, but I’ve recently noticed it in three big summer blockbusters. There are probably more—can you think of any? Basically, it involves some nominally good guys (usually the US government) nuking someone, while Our Hero tries to stop them.

5. The Avengers (2012): In the big climax of this film, The Battle of New York, The World Security Council decides to nuke New York in order to stop an alien invasion. This means that The Avengers having not only stop the invasion, but stop the nuke as well. And New York is saved by an orphaned billionaire genius playboy philanthropist.

4. The Dark Night Rises (2012): Bane seizes Gotham! Batman eventually defeats him, but a nuke, set up by good guy Dr. Leonid Pavel, who was forced to do so at gunpoint by Bane, has already been released on Gotham, and Batman must stop it! And Gotham is saved by an orphaned billionaire genius playboy philanthropist.

3. The Abyss (1989): Good guy Michael Biehn and a group of SEALs carry out a mission to steal a US nuke. Biehn then goes nuts due to his susceptibility to oxygen toxicity in the deep sea station where he’s located. He decides to set off the nuke to kill the unknown sentient life forms he’s been encountering. So our heroes, led by Ed Harris, need to stop the nuke. Harris succeeds, but he’s so angry about it that he kills Navy SEAL Biehn again in The Rock.

2. Godzilla (2014): OK, I don’t want to give away any spoilers. You’ll have to see it yourself.

1. Fail Safe (2000): Good guy US Government accidentally sends pilot with nuke to attack the Soviet Union. But it’s a mistake so Good Guy US Government tries to stop him. But due to fail safe system preventing pilot from stopping, things don’t go so well.
