Red Hen Press would like to invite you to our most important event of the year: our 16th Anniversary Champagne Luncheon at the Luxe Hotel in Los Angeles on November 7, 2010. As a major fundraiser for the press and for our Writing in the Schools program, this spectacular event will feature conversations with local literary celebrities, a deluxe luncheon, the conferring of two awards, a raffle, a silent auction, and readings by three highly esteemed authors.
Yusef Komunyakaa: The recipient of the 1994 Pulitzer Prize and the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award for his book Neon Vernacular: New and Selected Poems (Wesleyan 1993). His poetry explores life during the Civil Rights movement and in the jungles of Vietnam. His works include I Apologize for the Eyes in My Head (Wesleyan 1986; winner of the San Francisco Poetry Center Award) and Dien Cai Dau (Wesleyan 1988; winner of the Dark Room Poetry Prize).
Toi Derricotte: A New York Times Notable book author whose literary memoir, The Black Notebooks (W.W. Norton 1997) won the 1998 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Non-Fiction. She is co-founder of the Cave Canem Foundation, North America’s premier home for black poetry. Her honors include fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation and the Maryland State Arts Council.
Christopher Rice: The author of four New York Times best-selling novels, as well as the son of popular novelist Anne Rice. His novel Snow Garden (Simon and Schuster 2003) is the recipient of a Lambda Literary Award. A prominent literary figure in the gay community, Rice’s reviews and criticisms have appeared in The Advocate, the Washington Post, and Salon.
Since its founding in 1994, Red Hen Press has published over 200 books, created three prestigious literary awards, and begun four important reading series in Los Angeles that bring distinguished and emerging authors to the public stage. This anniversary, Red Hen also celebrates the press’s move to Pasadena, where it has been warmly welcomed to the city’s flourishing cultural scene by literary enthusiasts and Mayor Bill Bogaard.
