5. The state’s draconian anti-illegal alien bill, SB 1070. The chief objection is that Arizona law enforcement officers can stop anyone if they have a reasonable suspicion that they might be an illegal alien. Opponents have said this encourages racial profiling and violates laws against unreasonable search and seizure.
4. Its decision to outlaw ethnic studies: A law forbids courses “designed for students of a particular ethnic group” because they “promote resentment” towards whites and incite “the overthrow of the us govt.” Yes, they have banned Shakespeare’s play The Tempest, for it is too “ethnic.”
3. The state’s decision to pass laws allowing concealed weapons with no permit necessary.
2. “Birthers,” i.e. people who think President Obama was born in Kenya, not the U.S., passed a law requiring anyone running for office to show h9is or her birth certificate. The law would have required President Obama to show his “long form” birth certificate in order to register to run for reelection in the state. However, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer vetoed the legislation.
